Overview
The Honorable Lee A. Solomon (Ret.) joined Archer following a decade of service on the New Jersey Supreme Court. He has enjoyed a long, distinguished, and accomplished career in law, government, and the judiciary, and continues to be highly regarded for his decades of public service that has enriched the lives of so many in New Jersey. A member of the firm’s Business Litigation Group, Justice Solomon consults on trial and appellate matters, helping clients in all facets of disputes whether it involves complex and significant litigation matters, alternative dispute resolutions, or government investigations.
Justice Solomon came to the Supreme Court having served in all three branches of government, as a member of the State Assembly, a cabinet member serving as president of the Board of Public Utilities, and the judiciary. He is known for possessing a deep understanding of the issues facing the people, businesses, and official agencies of the State, and has a reputation for always treating those who came before him with great respect and humility. His judicial body of work spans the wide spectrum of the law, including the areas of environmental law, civil litigation, equity, family law, and criminal law.
While serving on the court, Justice Solomon was a leading voice in the efforts to shine a light on the importance of addressing and improving the mental health and well-being of the legal profession, in particular through his leadership as chair of the Supreme Court Committee on Wellness in the Law, where he began an important conversation to improve the lives of all who work in the profession and the public who are served by them.
Justice Solomon entered the legal field as a trial attorney working in Philadelphia, and later launched his own solo practice in New Jersey. He served on the Haddon Heights Borough Council, the Camden County Board of Freeholders, and the New Jersey General Assembly. As a Legislator, he distinguished himself as one of the policy leaders in Trenton. He served as Vice-Chairman of the Environmental Quality Committee and as a member of the Assembly Policy & Rules Committee. In addition, he served as Vice-Chairman of the Assembly Judiciary Committee, Vice-Chairman of the Law and Public Safety Committee, and Chairman of the Subcommittee on Criminal Justice.
Following his time on the State Assembly, Justice Solomon served five years as the Camden County Prosecutor and one year as Acting Prosecutor. In this position, he directed an office with a staff of more than 260, and the State’s third largest caseload. During this time, Justice Solomon was a member of the New Jersey County Prosecutors Association and served as Vice Chairman of the Juvenile Justice Committee, as well as the Inter-Agency Committee.
Immediately prior to his appointment to the Judiciary, Justice Solomon served as deputy U.S. Attorney for the southern vicinages, District of New Jersey, a position to which he was appointed in 2002 by then-U.S. Attorney Chris Christie. Justice Solomon led the U.S. Attorney’s Offices in Camden and Trenton, managing a staff of forty-seven Assistant U.S. Attorneys and support personnel, which handled approximately 950 cases per year.
Justice Solomon was first appointed to the bench in January 2006 by Acting Gov. Richard J. Codey. He served as a Judge of the Superior Court of New Jersey, sitting in Camden County. Justice Solomon was first assigned to the Family Division, and heard non-jury cases involving divorces, non-dissolutions, child custody, abuse and neglect, and domestic violence and criminal contempts for violations of domestic violence restraining orders. Justice Solomon was then assigned to the Criminal Division where he heard all varieties of criminal cases.
In February 2010, Gov. Christie named Justice Solomon to his cabinet, as president of the Board of Public Utilities. During his tenure as BPU President, Justice Solomon oversaw the expansion of New Jersey’s solar program and revised the energy master plan. He led efforts to organize hearings on the utilities’ companies planning for and their response to Hurricane Irene in 2011. Justice Solomon remained at the BPU until December 2011, when he was nominated by Gov. Christie to return to the bench in Camden. He rejoined the court in the civil division. In April 2013, Justice Solomon was named presiding judge of the criminal division, and in November 2013, he was named assignment judge, both by Chief Justice Stuart Rabner.
Following his nomination by Gov. Chris Christie and confirmation by the Senate, Justice Solomon was sworn in as an associate justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court on June 19, 2014. His term of service on the court concluded on August 17, 2024.
