TAX CHANGES IN THE FEDERAL ECONOMIC STIMULUS LEGISLATION
On February 17, 2009, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 was signed into law. The Act, also known as the federal Economic Stimulus Plan, contains approximately $300 billion in tax relief and incentives for renewable and clean energy investment.

Unless noted otherwise, the rules below apply to the returns of individuals only. They do not apply to gift, estate, trust, corporate or LLC/partnership tax returns.

IRS Extends Due Dates for Individual Returns
On Wednesday March 17th, the IRS announced that the due date for all individual tax returns for 2020 has been extended from April 15 to May 17. Further, the due date for all Form 1040-related payments has been extended to May 17.

IRS Issues Guidance on the Employee Retention Credit
The IRS issued Notice 2021-20 this week. It amounts to a lengthy set of 71 Q&A's addressing any number of rules relating to the Credit for the period ended December 31, 2020. The guidance offered in the Notice is specifically not applicable to the Credit as it has been extended into 2021. Since employers have, by now, already dealt with the Credit throughout the course of 2020, the timing of this release is somewhat puzzling. Nevertheless, we want employers to be aware that this guidance is now "out there."
